BIRTHDAY BOYS

A couple of dudes that I really admire share the same birthday and that just happens to be today.

In honor of the great Henry Rollins and the great Dan Christofferson, here are a few of my favorite pieces by each of them.

SAUL BASS

Today is the birthday of Saul Bass. He's one of my favorite designers/artists of all time.

Google put up a little tribute to him (that will probably be gone by the end of the day) that you should look at.

But seriously. I've always loved his work and will take any excuse to post more of it. There's an awesome video that I've mentioned before and his work is all over the place. The book that his daughter put together is one of my favorite things that I own.

I want to make a movie just so I can have an awesome title sequence in it. I'd probably beg Dan Christofferson to do it for me until he reluctantly agreed. One day.

I grabbed a few of the title designs from over here, but you should really take a few minutes to look at them all. Amazing stuff.

BEETEETH (REDUX)

I love it when Dan does these kinds of videos. He's one of my favorite artists and hell of a guy. I'm always excited when he has a new project (or projects) in the works—which he usually does. Dude has been burning the candle at both ends for as long as I've known him and shows no intention of slowing down.

He and his GF, Jillian, are getting a children's book together hopefully for release this year. I actually can't put into words how excited I am about that, either. You can take a look at a couple sneak peeks over at his blog (beeteeth.tumblr.com), but I'll definitely keep you updated on when it comes out, if you aren't already holding your breath.

He painted this on the wall at the now-defunct Salt Lake Citizen store in SLC during the Arts Festival this past summer. Good stuff. Check it out. And while you're at it, he just got his webstore up and running. Just in time for Christmas, too. How about that?

BEETEETH

My man Dan Christofferson—you may remember him from such posts as Terrible. Gentle. Man., The Bees Knees, and Top 5 Anythings - 2010‚—has another can't miss art show this weekend that requires your attendance.

He's been killing it lately with all kinds of different formats and this weekend at Cathedral Tattoo (249 East 400 South, SLC, UT) will be no different.

Lately, his work has focused a lot on images and impressions that our state—and the west in general—is known for, twisting and interpreting them to resemble his feelings.

Hints have been dropping all over his Instagram/Twitter feed (@robotwithwings), which if you're not following, you should be. There is also a little preview of what's to come hanging in the Trolley Square Whole Foods.

But make sure you come out this Friday night for what's likely to be the last Gallery Stroll where we'll have good, tolerable, walking-around-outside weather for the next five or six months. There are bound to be a few other good galleries (like Blonde Grizzly's Monster Show), but this is one you shouldn't miss.

TOP 5 ANYTHINGS - 2010 - DAN C.

I filmed a bunch of these and then kind of forgot about them. They didn't turn out as great as I'd hoped, and I think that has to do with the fact that I caught everyone at kind of an odd time and no one had as much energy as they normally do.

Dan was knee deep getting ready for his art show (I filmed this the Monday before his show opened at Blonde Grizzly, so he was probably a little stressed) and it was pretty late at night.

So instead of grouping three of them together like I had been, I decided to just give each person their own video. A lot of that has to do with people having a very short attention span for these things and asking them to watch a six minute video seemed a bit much. I like the idea of this, but I just wanted it to be a little more entertaining. I'm going to find a good way to do it for next year and it'll be great.

But now, here's Mr. BeeTeeth himself, Dan Christofferson.

THE BEES KNEES

Dan Christofferson is a god amongst men. He's got a gallery show at Blonde Grizzly next month that you can bet I'll be telling you more about.

A HUGE thank you to him for getting this done on relatively short notice. We didn't give him any sort of direction because we trusted his judgements and he knocked it out of the park.
